Yes, the iOS "keyboard suggestions" (or whatever its called) 's really useful, especially on the iPhone, even my iPhone 6+. The Mac does not have this built-in keyboard suggestions (or at least I am unaware of it), so I am not sure how easy/hard/practical this will be.
Really the esc method looks like it will be sufficient, just need to better document it. Maybe a menu item? One of the advantages of the esc method is that you do not have to take your hands off the keyboard, which is the primary entry method for the Mac. For iOS, you are tapping the screen, so tapping a slightly different part of the screen is the same as typing. So on the iPhone, I use the keyboard hints a great deal.
When I use my iPad with it's keyboard, tapping the scene is a bit awkward, though I do it from time to time when I've forgotten the full command. Might be nice to add the same sort of feature to the iOS version for when a keyboard is present. (meaning esc to bring up the hints, as on the Mac).
